GEO in 2026: How to Get Cited by ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI

Gamal Abdelaty

More and more buying decisions now start with a question to an AI assistant: "Who builds custom ERP systems in Cairo?" "Which Shopify developer in Egypt has good reviews?" The assistant replies with a short list and a few links. If your business isn't in that answer, you're not even in the race.

The short version: Generative engine optimization (GEO) means making your website easy for AI search tools to find, understand and quote. Google says it's still SEO: no special markup or file is required to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. What helps most is being indexable, answering real questions clearly, and backing your claims with specific facts, statistics and sources.

What is generative engine optimization (GEO)?

GEO is the practice of improving how often, and how well, your business appears in answers written by AI systems such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot, and Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode. You'll also see it called AEO (answer engine optimization) or LLMO.

The term comes from a 2023 research paper by Pranjal Aggarwal and colleagues, presented at the KDD 2024 conference. Their experiments showed that the right changes to a page's content could raise its visibility in AI-generated answers by up to 40%.

Is GEO different from SEO?

Less than the marketing around it suggests. Google's guidance for site owners on generative AI search, updated in July 2026, says plainly that optimizing for it is still SEO. Its documentation on AI features adds that there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode: a page needs to be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet.

Google is also clear about what it doesn't need:

  • No special schema markup for AI features. Structured data still helps for rich results, but it isn't required.
  • No "AI text files". Google Search ignores LLMS.txt files.
  • No chunking or rewriting your content specifically for machines.

So the foundation is the same as good SEO. What GEO adds is a sharper focus on how your content reads when a machine summarizes it.

What actually makes AI cite a page?

The GEO study tested nine ways of rewriting web content and measured how much each one increased a source's visibility in AI answers:

  • Adding quotations from relevant, credible sources performed best.
  • Adding statistics, meaning specific numbers instead of vague claims, came close behind.
  • Citing sources helped strongly, especially when combined with other methods.
  • Improving fluency and readability also gave a meaningful boost.
  • Keyword stuffing, the classic old-SEO trick, didn't help, and on Perplexity it made results worse.

The most encouraging finding is for smaller businesses: lower-ranked websites gained the most. In one test, citing sources raised the visibility of sites ranked fifth in search results by 115%, while top-ranked sites lost ground. Backlinks take years to build; clear, well-supported content is something any business can produce this month.

A practical GEO checklist for your website

1. Make sure you can be found at all

  • Your pages are indexed in Google and Bing, and robots.txt doesn't block search crawlers.
  • Important content is real text, not text inside images or hidden in sliders.
  • Each service has its own page with a clear title, instead of one page that lists everything.

2. Answer the question in the first paragraph

AI tools pull answers from passages that make sense on their own. Open each page and section with a direct, complete answer, then add detail. If someone asks "How much does a custom CRM cost in Egypt?", a page that opens with a price range and what affects it is far easier to quote than one that opens with "Welcome to our company."

3. Be specific

Replace "fast delivery" with "most websites launch in three to four weeks." Replace "experienced team" with what you built, for whom, and what changed. Numbers, names, dates and prices are what assistants quote.

4. Show your sources and your proof

Link to the studies and official pages you rely on. Show real projects with screenshots, real reviews, and a named author with a profile page. These signal experience and trust to people and machines alike.

5. Keep your business facts consistent everywhere

Your business name, owner's name, phone number, address and services should read the same on your website, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn and directories. When an AI system finds conflicting versions, it's less confident about recommending you. When we audited our own site, the owner's name appeared in three different forms across our pages and profiles. Fixing that was one of the first things we did.

6. Add an FAQ where it helps readers

Short questions with direct answers match the way people talk to AI assistants. Use them where they genuinely help readers, not as a list of keywords.

7. Use structured data correctly

Schema markup for your organization, services, articles and FAQs helps search engines understand your pages and qualify for rich results. Google says it isn't required for AI features, so treat it as a clarity tool, and make sure it always matches what's visible on the page.

8. Keep it fresh

Update prices, dates and examples. An article that still says "this year" about 2023 tells readers and machines that nobody is looking after the page.

What to avoid

  • Mass-producing near-identical pages for every variation of a question. Google treats this as scaled content abuse.
  • Buying fake mentions and reviews. They're easy to spot and can damage trust permanently.
  • Rewriting good content into robotic Q&A just for AI. Write for people first.
  • Expecting overnight results. AI answers change as the search index behind them changes.

How to measure GEO

  • Google Search Console includes traffic from AI features in your search performance data, and Google points site owners to its generative AI performance report.
  • Bing Webmaster Tools offers an AI performance report as well.
  • Ask the assistants yourself every month. Search for your service and city in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot, and note whether you appear, what they say about you and which pages they cite.
  • Ask your leads. Add "ChatGPT or another AI assistant" as an option to "How did you hear about us?" on your contact form.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an llms.txt file to appear in AI answers?

Not for Google: its documentation says Google Search ignores LLMS.txt files. Some other AI tools may read one, so it does no harm, but it won't replace clear, indexable pages.

Is GEO only for big brands?

No. The original GEO research found that lower-ranked websites benefited the most from better content, because AI answers depend more on what a page says than on how many backlinks it has.

How long does GEO take to work?

Changes show up as pages are recrawled and re-evaluated, which can take anywhere from days to months. Fix the foundations first (indexing, clear service pages, consistent business facts), then improve content steadily.

Does schema markup help with ChatGPT and Gemini?

Structured data helps search engines understand your pages, and AI answers in search are built on that index. Google says no special markup is required for its AI features, so think of schema as a way to make your facts unambiguous, not as a shortcut.

Where to go from here

The fastest wins are usually on your service pages: direct answers, real prices or price ranges, proof, and consistent business facts.
